Dr. Ajaib Singh Brar, a Professor of Chemistry and joint Professor, Centre for Polymer Science and Engineering, at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi has a vast experience of more than 35 years of working in the field of education and research at prestigious National and International Institutes in various capacities. Prof. Brar did his B.Sc. from Faridkot, Punjab and M.Sc. from Punjabi University, Patiala. He did his Ph.D. from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and got UNESCO fellowship in 1974. After completing Ph.D., he joined Guru Nanak Dev University and served there for six years. Prof. Brar has worked in the field of catalysis, Mossbauer spectroscopy, photochemistry and currently in the field of NMR spectroscopy of polymers. He has international recognition in these fields.
Prof. Brar joined IIT Delhi as Assistant Professor in 1982. He has published more than 210 papers in refereed International and National journals and 50 papers in the proceedings of conferences / symposia. Prof. Brar has delivered 115 lectures in conferences / symposia at various institutes /universities. He has delivered invited lectures at American Chemical Society conferences and at leading universities in USA, Europe and Japan. He delivered lectures in Japan on the invitation of JSPS and in The Netherlands on the invitation of The Royal Academy of The Netherlands for Arts and Science. Prof. Brar is having research collaboration with RWTH, Technical University, Aachen, Germany (ranked as the best Technical University in Germany). He was a visiting faculty at RWTH, Aachen during June-July in 2005 and 2006. Prof. Brar has guided 25 Ph.D. students and 20 M. Tech. students. He has sponsored projects of Rs. 1.50 crores and established High Resolution NMR Center at IIT Delhi.
Prof. Brar was Chairman GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering) 2002, 2004 and JMET 2002, 2004. He was chairman for conducting DRDO-SET 2004 (Defense Research and Development Organization - Scientist Entrance Test), through which, about 600 scientists were recruited for various DRDO laboratories. He was Head of the Department of Chemistry, IIT Delhi . Prof. Brar was awarded Outstanding Research Award, IIT Delhi in 1994.  He is Fellow of the "National Academy of Sciences"  and “Punjab Academy of Sciences.   Professor  Brar was appointed Vice-Chancellor, University of Lucknow on 6th January 2008. As Chairman, CPMT-2008 (Uttar Pradesh), he successfully organized this prestigious examination of the State in an exemplary manner.  On September 23rd  2008  University of Lucknow  conferred Degree of D.Lit ( Honoris Causa) on Hon’ble Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil, the President of India.  Professor Brar was awarded  prestigious  “U.P.Ratan award”  by all India Conference  of Intellectuals  in 2008 and was  recently awarded “ Saraswati Samman” in 2009 in recognition  of his services to the field of  Education. As Vice-Chancellor he has brought various reforms in the University administration through his transparent and effective governance .  His main focus has been on high quality in teaching and research and to promote efficiency and transparency in administrative work.  Prof. Brar is member of the Society, Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, the body  which governs  the I.I.M., Lucknow. He is member of Governing Council of CBMR, SGPGI, Lucknow.  He is the reviewer to almost all reputed  International Journals in his research field.  Prof. Brar is a member of various National Committees  in the field of education and research and is also the member of Selection Committees  of several Universities and Institutes of higher education in the country.
Looking into the commendable work done by Prof. Brar at Lucknow University, the Governor Punjab & Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University appointed him  Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. He joined the University on 15th  of July, 2009. As Vice-Chancellor his main focus is to energize  and streamline various systems in teaching, examination, research as well as in the administration of the University.
Here are a few achievements of Dr. Brar as Vice-Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, since his joining:
  1. The University has regained the highest sports Award in the country Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy for the year 2009-10
  2. The University won the Overall Championship in North Zone Inter-University Cultural Competitions in November 2009 and 2010 and was Runners up of National Cultural Trophy in 2009.
  3. The University has risen to rank 16 in the top 50 universities of the country, as per recent survey conducted by ‘India Today’.
  4. The University has 11th Position, out of the 500 universities, in Science Publications in the Scientific Analysis of some disciplines : Comparison of Indian institutions with other International Institutions.
  5. First University to introduce on-line admissions to its courses/on-line counselling for State Level Admissions.
  6. First University in the State to introduce Credit Based Evaluation System.
  7. Earmarked Rs. 10.00 Crore for purchase of sophisticated instruments.
  8. Decentralization of Examination System.
  1. Revision of all the courses and increase in number of seats in various courses.
  2. Introduction of Pre-Ph.D. courses in all the University Departments
  3. Grant of 50 Ph.D. Fellowships every year funded by the University.
  4. Conduct of examinations, declaration of results, as per schedule, before 30th June each year; and commencement of classes as per schedule.
  5. Starting of Rural Colleges in Kapurthala, Gurdaspur and Tarn Taran districts under the Punjab Govt. / UGC scheme.
  6. Introduction of New professional courses in Shaheed Ram Singh Pathania Memorial College, Niari, the constituent college of the University.
  7. Starting of MCA 3-Years course at Guru Nanak Dev University College, Jalandhar.
  8. New Astro-turf for Hockey Ground.
  9. Starting of Internal Quality Assurance Cell
Dr. Brar is Chairman/Convener/Member of the following bodies/committees
  1. Chairman, Progressive Educational Society to start Batch of 50 rural students in +1 Non-Medical, as per policy of the Punjab Government to prepare rural students of Punjab for admission to Indian Institutes of Technology and other National Level Engineering Entrance Tests.
  2. Convener, Consultative Group of Vice-Chancellors appointed by the Punjab Government to review the status of higher education in the State and suggest measures for improvement.
  3. Chairman, University Syndicate, Senate, Finance Committee, Academic Council, Planning Board and other University Bodies.
  4. Chairman of the committee appointed by UGC for introduction of on-line submission of applications for various examinations/fellowships & Member of the committees appointed by UGC from time to time.
  5. Member, Executive Committee, National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore in 2008.
  6. Member, NAAC Committee to prepare roadmap for mandatory assessment & accreditation of higher education institutions.
  7. Member, NAAC Committee constituted by Chairman of the Executive Committee to prepare the guidelines by identifying the criteria as well as methodology to be adopted to review the performance of UGC Academic Staff Colleges.
